The Alberta Electric System Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non:discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market which, in 2016, had 188 participants and approximately 2 Billion in annual energy transactions.
Reporting to the Manager Public Affairs, the External Relations Advisor will provide strategic and a thorough understanding of media relations, crisis communications, issues management and government relations to positively influence the AESO’s reputation among external audiences and advise the communications team and the business on issues affecting the AESO.
Superior attention to detail and ability to work under tight timelines is critical. The incumbent will provide guidance and advice on broad matters related to communications and media relations, including developing and implementing strategic media outreach plans, creating and editing communications materials, fielding media requests, acting as spokesperson as required, building and developing media and other stakeholder relationships as well as analyzing media coverage and continuously assessing the effectiveness of media outreach.
This role will also have key responsibilities for the AESO’s crisis communications activities. The incumbent will maintain and update the crisis communication plan, train communications team members, conduct regular drills and other related duties as required.
:Developing and creating communication strategies to support and enhance corporate image and objectives.
:Providing background for media and acting as a spokesperson when required. This will include directly supporting the Director of Communications, Manager of Public Affairs and working with the executive team when required.
:Drafting key messages and briefing documents as required.
:Performing media analysis and managing and tracking issues as they arise.
:Working closely with other members of the communications team to stay apprised of organizational developments and external issues.
:Advise communications managers, director and advisors on communications, media and issues management strategies.
:Act as a Communication’s Lead for the electricity industry crisis group.
:Support and organize media technical briefings as required.
:Provide back:up support for a variety of external communications activities
Education / Degree / Certification:
:A degree in Public Relations, Communications or Journalism is preferred.
:3 to 5 years of experience in an external communications role with direct experience in media relations (including as a spokesperson), issues management and crisis communications
:Be regularly available on an on:call basis to respond to crisis and media inquiries
:Exceptional writing skills
:Experience supporting government relations activities
:Attention to detail and ability to proofread and copy edit
:Motivated team player who is eager to support a dedicated group of communications professionals
:Capable of coordinating multiple projects and ability to shift priorities on a daily basis
:Experience working with all levels of an organization
:Strong interpersonal skills and a customer service mindset
:Strong proficiency with standard desktop environment particularly with Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
